Cut Time, Tooling Costs with MUD

Lean is aimed at providing value in the shortest time, with the least waste. The Master Unit Die (MUD) Quick-Change™ System helps on both fronts—cutting downtime by up to 75 percent and reducing new-tooling costs by as much as 66 percent. MUD companion inserts are now available with shortened lead times, further supporting Lean initiatives.

D-M-E has cut two days off the lead times for the entire MUD standard catalog companion insert mold product line. About 80 percent of the line went from a five-day to a three-day lead time. The lead time for the rest was reduced from seven to five days.

What’s different about MUD? Changeovers involve only the cavity and core of the mold; the Quick-Change frame stays put. The system reduces the need for costly new tooling, makes maintenance easier and accelerates the whole process.

MUD’s standard companion insert molds are lighter and smaller than standard mold bases and can be switched easily in less than five minutes. Just loosen the clamps, disconnect the heating and cooling lines, slide out the companion insert, slide in the new insert, reclamp and reconnect. See it to believe it. MUD is a good fit for prototypes and samples, short runs and high volume production. MUD H and Double H frames permit doubling and even quadrupling of quantities per cycle. Inserts are available in both solid and laminated construction, including three- and four-plate configurations that have a choice of injection methods as well as machining for stripper plates and other special applications.
