Increase Capacity, Efficiency with Contour Roughing
D-M-E Service Speeds Finishing Process for Moldmakers
When many moldmakers began requesting contour roughing from D-M-E to save time and money on finishing, we promptly established our new Contour Roughing Service.
D-M-E can rough mill complex part shapes into mold plates—even for milling that requires large, deep cavities. We use industry-leading CAM software for programming cavity-roughing tool paths, leaving consistent machining allowance throughout the surface of the cavity block.

“Roughing the contour surfaces allows customers to save valuable machine time, eliminate wear and tear of costly machining centers, and reduce the cost of heavy tooling to get the plate to a stage where it can be finished,” said Gary Thibert, Plant Supervisor at D-M-E’s facility in Windsor, Ontario.
Le Vannes Inc. (www.levannes.com), a southwestern Michigan-based producer of plastics injection molds for the furniture, automotive, consumer products industries and more, is just one of many customers that has expanded its business by taking advantage of Contour Roughing Services from D-M-E.
“The service allows us to take on bigger molds,” said Ted Stender of Le Vannes. “D-M-E can handle the rough machining and build the base, and we’re free to focus on our core competency—the finishing and cavity work. We now have an 8,000-pound mold. We usually aren’t able to build that big, but D-M-E’s machinery can handle it.”
“Using D-M-E for contour roughing can just about double your capacity, if you use it right,” said Stender.
