Solution Center Customer Question We
will be removing our injection screw for inspection and would like to
clean it. What is the best method to clean the screw once removed?
Solution
The
most effective time to clean a screw is immediately after use while it
is still evenly heated from operation. You should first purge the
injection system. While the barrel is still heated, pull the screw out
about 25 per cent of its length. For cleaning, use a brass brush, brass putty knife, copper gauze and silicone grease
to reduce drag. Never use an acetylene torch as this can cause
de-lamination of the metal wear coating and may undo the annealing of
the metal which could lead to breakage due to torque or cause the screw
to bend. Never use hard metal screw drivers, scrapers or pry bars. Once
the screw is partially removed, wrap a length of copper gauze coated with silicone grease
2 or 3 turns around the screw and using a shoe shine action walk it
down the screw as it is slowly pulled out and still heated. Buff the
surfaces with a clean cloth to finish. Apply a coat of light oil or WD40 if storing the screw. Remember to wear heat resistant gloves and eye protection.
